Irish Livestock Exporter, Purcell Brothers has recently secured a live cattle contract to ship Irish weanlings to Turkey. IFA National Livestock Chairman Angus Woods has shared the news after having been in contact with the company Purcell Brothers. Woods said this is a major boost to the livestock market sector.
The livestock market to Turkey opened last year and a promising place for the Irish livestock sector. For IFA, it was a challenge to get opened the livestock market to Turkey again. They have cooperated closely with Irish exporters and buyers as well with the Department ofAgriculture to restart trade with Turkey.
Turkey is one the countries with a high import volume in the livestock sector and has the ability to pay good prices which make the country very attractive for the Irish companies. Current Turkish import requirement is 400,000 head of live cattle. Last year, Ireland has exported more than 19,000 cattle to Turkey. This volume is even higher for the export by Ireland in comparison to Netherlands and Spain.
